Join Gaudete on May 19, 2019 at 7 pm for a special sacred music offering of the Son of God Mass by James Whitbourn. This beautiful concert version of Whitbourn’s mass setting features the choir, organist Kris Wittry, and soprano saxophone soloist Lynn Baker.

This contemplative piece is reminiscent of plain chant and shifts through celebratory and meditative elements. With equal emphasis among the instrumentalists and singers, the mass invites the listener into an intimate conversation between the choir and saxophone. As Gaudete’s final offering for the 2018-2019 season, this piece will stay with you throughout the summer until the choir returns in October.

Directed by David Bell, Gaudete performs at the Althea Center for Engaged Spirituality, 1400 Williams Street, in Denver. We present short, uplifting offerings of sacred music without the church, generally once per month between October and May. There is no admission fee; your free-will offering is always gratefully accepted and goes to support our programming. Learn more about us at gaudetesingers.org, and stay tuned for our 2019-2020 season announcement! Gaudete is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization.

Hey guess what! Gaudete is about to present our second offering on January 20, 7 pm, at the Althea Center in Denver. As always, there is no ticket required (although your donation to help support the choir is always gratefully accepted). The theme for this offering is Carry Me Home, involving music that gently explores the concept of death.

When we think of death, we often think of fear and pain and loss. This music approaches death from a different angle – that of a continuing journey toward the home from which we originally came. Rather than inducing terror or prolonging grief, this music instead explores death as a final comfort or, even more, as a homecoming bringing blessed rest at the end of life.

In other news, Gaudete is now a 501(c)(3), Colorado non-profit choir! Our goal continues to be to present monthly offerings of sacred music throughout much of the year. If you would like to donate to the choir, are interested in learning more about what we do, or would like to find out about auditions and other membership requirements, please contact us at info@gaudetesingers.org. And keep watching for our upcoming offerings. We have some exciting events for you throughout the rest of this season…

See you on the 20th!

Peace

We are so excited to share our inaugural offering with you! We just wanted to post a reminder…

It’s hard to believe it’s already November! With Halloween behind us, the chilly days and deepening dark of winter are on their way, and the quick slide into the holiday season has begun. What better time to kindle a fire of sacred music that evokes faith and community with one another?

To that end, Gaudete is preparing for our very first offering, which will take place on November 18, 2018 at 7 pm at the Althea Center in Denver. The performance, conducted by our music director, David Bell, will set the precedent for Gaudete’s ongoing, monthly offerings of music through sacred chant, hymns, and anthems–including a mass movement by Schubert, a Russian Orthodox meditation on communion, and a haunting piece about faith set to writing found on a concentration camp wall. There will also be a few instrumental pieces played by our wonderful pianist, Kris Wittry. Free will donations to support the choir are appreciated.

All this comes together to bring you approximately 40 minutes of beauty and meaning. You don’t need to be religious–just come by and share in this performance to close your weekend and prepare for the holiday season, refreshing your mind, body, and spirit through a community experience of uplifting, thoughtful, stimulating, and meditative music.

It’s almost the end of October! With Halloween less than a week away, the chilly days and deepening dark of November are nearly upon us, and the quick slide into the winter holiday season will begin. We are pleased to introduce Gaudete, a new kind of choir in Denver that will provide opportunities for singing sacred music for people who don’t want to go to church (or who just want to sing more!). We are creating a new choral singing experience, and we’re looking for singers who are interested in what we have to offer:

  • A chance to sing sacred works without the trappings and dogma of a church service
  • Opportunities to learn about new types of spiritual music and to sing old favorites, from a range of denominations and cultures
  • Performing monthly in a Sunday evening offering to the community

As a singer in Gaudete, you will be auditioned based on our expected standards, which include:

  • Ability to match pitch and sing in the correct octave
  • Basic sight-reading capability, which will establish your ability to work on music outside of rehearsal
  • Ability to sing a musical line or melody against a contrasting musical line or harmony
  • A love of singing choral music

We rehearse on Thursday evenings, 7-9 pm with our first rehearsal on Thursday, Oct. 11th, and our first public offering is Sunday, Nov. 18th at 7pm.

We rehearse and perform at the Althea Center, 1400 N. Williams St., Denver, CO 80218.

Gaudete is starting out as a dues-based choir, with hopes of achieving a donor base and non-profit status; For more information or to schedule an audition, contact the director, David Bell, at info@gaudetesingers.org or 720-384-3712.
